Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Riesling Loibner Federspiel 2025 from Weingut Emmerich Knoll
Tasting
Appearance
The wine shows a luminous, perfectly clear pale yellow to lemon-yellow hue with slight greenish reflections, true to a dry Wachau Riesling in all its freshness.
Nose
The nose opens with vibrant notes of lime and lemon zest, accompanied by white peach and apricot. White flowers and fresh herbs complete the bouquet, which is underpinned by a pronounced, stony minerality.
Palate
The palate is dry, elegant and precisely structured, carried by a brilliant acidity. Citrus fruits lend a juicy character, while white peach and apricot soften the whole slightly. The long finish ends on a distinct mineral imprint.
Food and Wine Pairing
This Riesling is an ideal partner for poultry, asparagus and composed salads. It also pairs beautifully with grilled white fish brightened with lemon and aromatic herbs, where its freshness and minerality find a natural echo.
A Dry, Mineral Riesling Typical of the Wachau, Crafted by Weingut Emmerich Knoll
The Estate
Weingut Emmerich Knoll took shape in 1947, the year from which bottling became systematic within the family, based in Unterloiben, in Lower Austria, in the heart of the Wachau. Now run by August and Emmerich Knoll Jr., the estate covers 19.5 hectares, nearly 90% of which are devoted to Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Recognisable by its label adorned with Saint Urban, the estate ranks among the classic references of the region.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come from plots in the Loiben area of the Wachau, on flat terrain close to the Danube, with alluvial and sandy soils. It is not a single Ried but a blend of vines of varying ages, from 5 to 45 years old, averaging around 25 years, planted at a density of 3,500 to 4,000 vines per hectare and managed using sustainable, hand-worked viticulture.
The Vintage
The 2025 vintage faithfully reflects the Wachau terroir, with balanced ripeness allowing the Riesling to express both freshness and minerality, in keeping with the style of this Austrian estate.
Winemaking and Maturation
To produce the Riesling Loibner Federspiel 2025, the grapes are not destemmed and undergo a short skin maceration before gentle pressing in a pneumatic press. Fermentation takes place in a combination of wooden foudres and stainless steel tanks, using both native and cultured yeasts, over 5 to 10 days at a temperature between 20 and 23°C. Malolactic fermentation is blocked to preserve the freshness of the wine, which then rests on its lees for about three months, without lees stirring, before bottling.
Grape Variety
This wine is made from 100% Riesling.
