Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Numanthia 2021
Tasting Notes
Nose
The nose of this wine is serious, approachable and rich. It reveals notes of damp earth, aromatic herbs and dark fruit, enhanced by sweet spices, an oily touch and hints of cocoa pod.
Palate
The attack is rich, full and velvety, with an elegance that is perceptible from the very first sip. Polished tannins envelop the palate and lead to a refined, lingering finish. The wine unfolds with dark fruit, spicy notes, savoury nuances, thyme and oregano, as well as touches of red tea leaves and cinnamon, for a long and elegant whole.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine from Toro is ideally paired with grilled beef sirloin, black rice with octopus, or a chocolate fondant.
Serving and Cellaring
Numanthia 2021 is best served at a temperature of 15°C. With an ageing potential of up to 20 years, it can be enjoyed until around 2041.
The Power and Elegance of the Spanish Terroir of Toro
The Estate
Founded in 1998 in Valdefinjas, in the heart of the Toro appellation in Castilla y León, Bodega Numanthia has established itself as a benchmark among Spain's great wines. It now belongs to Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of the LVMH group. The estate stands out for its exceptional heritage of old Tinta de Toro vines, some of which are over a century old, managed using sustainable viticulture. The estate is currently managed by Julio Rodriguez Buren, estate director.
The Vineyard
The vines used for this cuvée are spread across more than a hundred plots within the Toro appellation, with an average age of around 85 years. The sandy, stony soils lie on clay subsoils, providing excellent drainage and low fertility, which encourage grape concentration. The vines, trained as bush vines (gobelet) and widely spaced, are grown without irrigation, allowing deep rooting suited to Toro's continental climate.
The Vintage
The 2021 vintage experienced a rainy winter and spring, with below-average temperatures and a slightly wetter start to summer, ensuring sufficient water reserves for good ripening. During the ripening phase, temperatures remained slightly below average. The harvest began a few days later than usual, with good levels of red fruit, good acidity and perfect sanitary condition.
Winemaking and Ageing
To produce this Spanish wine, the grapes are fully destemmed before a 5-day cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation lasts 7 days, with daily pump-overs, followed by post-fermentation maceration on the skins with gentle punching down for an additional week. The fermentation temperature is controlled between 26°C and 28°C, and malolactic fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel tanks. Ageing lasts 15 months in 225 L and 400 L French oak barrels, split equally between new barrels and one-wine barrels, with racking carried out every 4 months.
Grape Variety
This wine is made from Tinta de Toro.
