Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Blandy's Malmsey Colheita Single Harvest 2010
Tasting notes
Appearance
This Malmsey Colheita 2010 shows a clear, brilliant amber colour with golden highlights that immediately hint at the wine's richness.
Nose
The nose opens with indulgent notes of jam and sweet candied fruit, accompanied by touches of brioche and honey that reflect the wine's long ageing.
Palate
The palate is sweet, rich and velvety, carried by a pleasant freshness that balances the wine's generosity. The long finish reveals warm notes of marmalade and spice.
Food and wine pairings
This Malmsey is ideally enjoyed as a digestif, but it also pairs wonderfully with fruitcake, cream biscuits or a crème brûlée, and more broadly with rich, indulgent desserts.
Serving and cellaring
We recommend decanting the Malmsey Colheita Single Harvest 2010 before serving, as this type of wine can develop a natural deposit over time. Store the bottle upright, away from light, in a cool, dry place, ideally at a constant temperature not exceeding 16°C.
A rich and spicy Madeira Malmsey, the hallmark of Blandy's
The estate
Blandy's has been producing Madeira wines since 1811 under its eponymous brand and, after seven generations, remains the only founding family of the Madeira wine trade that still owns and runs its original company. Based in Funchal, on the island of Madeira, the estate is today majority-owned by the Blandy family, several of whose members sit on the group's management board. True to its heritage, Blandy's cultivates ancestral expertise while distinguishing itself through quality-driven initiatives, particularly around vintage-dated colheita wines.
The vineyard
The grapes for this Malmsey come from São Jorge, on the north coast of Madeira, where the Malvasia grape thrives on volcanic soils made up of basalt, trachyte, tuff and conglomerates. This Portuguese vine is trained in latada, a traditional pergola system that promotes air circulation in this mild, humid oceanic climate. The harvest is carried out by hand, with a quality-focused selection of grapes staggered over several weeks according to their ripeness.
The vintage
This Terras Madeirenses wine comes from a single harvest, that of 2010. The grapes were carefully hand-sorted, progressively over several weeks, in order to follow the development of their ripeness as closely as possible before vinification.
Winemaking and ageing
The Malmsey Colheita Single Harvest 2010 was aged using the traditional "canteiro" method, in 650-litre casks kept at ambient temperature until it was bottled in 2023. The wine was vinified by oenologist Francisco Albuquerque at harvest time, before being bottled under the supervision of Tamlyn Currin.
Grape variety
This Madeira wine is made from the Malvasia grape, grown on the terraces of São Jorge, on the north coast of Madeira.
